COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- With both teams entering the game undefeated, Cornell suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night, falling to unanimous No. 1 and defending National Champion Maryland, 17-9. The Big Red's nine goals, however, tied for the most the Terps have allowed this season, matching the total that No. 4/6 Syracuse put up.

Cornell (8-1) got on the board first before Maryland went on a 7-0 run and led by six at the half. The Big Red turned the pressure on in the second, with junior goaltender
Renee Poullott making six of her seven saves in the final frame. The Big Red has gotten goals from at least five different goal scorers in all nine of its games this season. Junior
Amie Dickson led the charge for Cornell on Saturday, netting four goals, while classmate
Catherine Ellis added a goal and an assist.
"I'm happy that we didn't take too long to get into the game. We scored the first goal, which was kind of cool," said head coach
Jenny Graap. "Of course they answered back pretty quickly, but I'm glad we were able to take the field and be composed and play our game."

On the opening draw, sophomore
Joey Coffy drew her Maryland counterpart into a false start, giving Cornell the game's first possession. Junior
Amie Dickson took advantage, bouncing a shot past goalkeeper Megan Taylor to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead with 1:13 into the game, marking the first time the Terps had given up the first goal of the game this season.

Maryland (10-0) answered quickly, with leading scorer Megan Whittle evening the score at one with 27:23 to go. Taylor Cummings then gave the Terrapins the lead less than a minute later. Free-position goals from Bryn Boucher and Cummings gave Maryland a 4-1 advantage. Zoe Stukenberg's blast put the Terps up by four with 24:40 left in the first half.

After Maryland took a 6-1 lead, junior defender
Catie Smith intercepted a pass from the Terps offense, giving Cornell the ball. On the ensuing possession, senior
Shelby McNeilly was taken down inside the fan, earning a free-position shot, but a Maryland defender knocked her shot wide.

The Terps added a man-up goal with 18:48 to go in the first half.

Senior
Emily Tripodi picked up the ensuing draw control and kept Cornell in possession moments later when
Catherine Ellis's wide shot sailed out of bounds. Dickson then added her second of the day, picking up her own rebound to cut the deficit to 7-2 with 15:49 left in the opening frame.

Kelsey Cummings, younger sister of Taylor, added a man-up tally for the Terps.

Ellis pulled another back for the Big Red, scoring under high pressure from a Maryland defender, turning and finishing high with 12:35 remaining in the half.

Cornell won the draw after the Terps made it 9-3, and Dickson completed her third hat trick of the season, sending in a shot from straight on to bring the Big Red back within five.

After Maryland had added two more, Dickson added her fourth of the day, cutting loose her defender to beat Taylor into the top left corner.

Junior goalkeeper
Renee Poullott made a big save on Whittle with 2:51 left in the half, gaining possession back for the Big Red. Coffy took advantage, sending in a rocket from the right side to make it 11-6.

The Terps got another before the half expired to take a 12-6 advantage into the break.

A free-position shot from Whittle opened the scoring in the second half.
Senior
Catherine Moubayed came up with a huge defensive play moments later, causing a turnover from Whittle before the Big Red back line smothered the Terps' next rush as well. Poullott then made a low save on Taylor Hensh's free-position shot.

After Maryland had taken a 15-6 lead, Tripodi got the ball behind the net and fed classmate
Olivia Mattyasovszky, who used her height to finish over top of Taylor for her team-leading 18
th goal of the season.

Poullott then made two big saves with the Big Red a man down, including one on a free-position shot from Whittle. Cornell then held possession in Maryland's end for the remainder of the penalty time. The Big Red continued to hold onto it, and junior
Kristy Gilbert capitalized, firing past Taylor from the left side with 17:55 to go.

Whittle added her third of the day, scoring the Terps' first goal in over 12 minutes to make it 16-8 with 9:46 to play. Taylor Cummings tacked on another 36 seconds later.

Freshman
Tomasina Leska potted Cornell's ninth of the night with 1:12 left, juking her defender to net her eighth goal of the season.

The Big Red returns home and to Ivy League play next weekend, hosting Dartmouth on Saturday at noon. The game will be simulcast on the Ivy League Digital Network and ESPN3 and will be part of a Community and Coaches vs. Cancer event.
