Women's Track and Field Impresses at Bison Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Cornell women's track and field team, ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Region, continued to roll this weekend at Bucknell's mammoth 120-team invitational, the Bison Outdoor Classic, with yet another school record and several other changes to the all-time top lists.  Competing on both Saturday and Sunday, the Big Red had nearly two dozen top 15 event finishes and several competitive breakthroughs.  Ideal spring temperatures on Saturday gave way to a steady rain on Sunday, but the Cornell women took advantage of competitive fields on both days.

Senior Leena Morris broke the third Cornell women's school record in the last 8 days, following up on freshman Beatrice Juskeviciute's heptathlon school record on Thursday and sophomore Kellian Kelly's new 200m standard last Saturday in California.  Morris claimed the school record in the hammer on Sunday, reaching 179-10 for fifth place with a fine series that also included a throw of 177-10.  And she was busy, as she also placed fifth in the shot put, reaching 46-8.75 (an ECAC qualifier) and throwing 126-6 in the discus.  Junior co-captain Niko Kanaris also had a banner day, setting an outdoor personal best of 47-1.75 in the shot put to place fourth and move to No. 5 all-time at Cornell.  Also stepping up in the throws was freshman Faith Polando, who reached 163-6 for 12th in the hammer.

Cornell also had an event win on the weekend, as sophomore Marguerite Lorenzo equaled her seasonal best in the high jump, clearing 5-7.25 to place first.  Two other Cornellians were in the top-10:  sophomore Jenna Berry was sixth at 5-5.25 and freshman Monique Anderson was tenth at 5-3 ¼.  In the pole vault, junior Claire Kao was over 12-2.5 to once again better the ECAC standard in fifth place, while freshman Maria Siciliano was tenth at 11-8.5.   In the long jump, freshman Angelica Arroyo cracked the top 15 with a 13th place leap of 16-10.5 in the rain.

The Big Red had a terrific weekend in the middle distance and distance events. Senior co-captain Annie Taylor led the way, with a pair of fourth place finishes in the highly competitive and deep 800m and 1500m fields. On Saturday evening, she ran a two-second PR of 4:20.94 in the 1500m to place fourth and move to No. 6 all-time at Cornell, behind only multiple time All-Americans Stephanie Best '91, Shannon Hugard '18, Morgan Uceny '07, Loren Mooney '93, and Jennifer Cobb '92 in Cornell history.  She then came back on Sunday morning to run a seasonal best of 2:10.73 for fourth in the 800.  Finishing a fantastic second in that 800m was her senior classmate Tina Welzer, who set a PR of 2:08.52 while giving the eventual winner a tough fight every step of the way. Also placing in the top-15 was freshman Allyson Gaedje, who ran a PR of 2:12.82 for 11th.  And also running very well were juniors Victoria Casarrubias (seasonal best 2:14.40) and Sara O'Malley (2:14.80) and senior Marissa Holl (2:15.73, a PR).  The Big Red had two other ECAC qualifiers in the middle distances as the steeplechase duo of senior co-captain Briar Brumley (4:33.53) and sophomore Gabrielle Orie (4:33.63) competed well in moving down to the 1500.  And in the longer distances, Cornell had several good race performances.  Freshman Natalie Morris had a breakout performance in the 5000, running 17:05.01 for 14th behind mile splits of 5:28, 5:30, 5:30 and was joined as an ECAC-qualifier by junior Audrey Huelskamp, who had a 30-second PR of 17:07.41.  And sophomore Annie Glodek had an 18-second PR to win her heat of the 5000m in 17:57.68.  Closing out the distance events on Saturday night, junior Kyleigh Spearing qualified for the ECACs in her debut 10K race, running 37:05.40.

There were several other top-15 showings on the track.  Senior Ellery Bianco had a seasonal best, and ECAC qualifier, of 62.09 for third in the 400 hurdles, closing very well in the last 100 meters, while junior Abbey Yatsko was 14th in 65.02.  Also placing in the top 10 in the hurdles was freshman Gabriela Garza, who was 10th in the 100m hurdles in 15.47.  In the 400m, freshman Kayleigh Furth impressed with a seventh place 57.47.  She also led off the 4x100m that won their heat in 49.21 to place seventh overall, teaming with Garza, junior Anastashia Alfred, and Bianco.  And the 4x800m of junior Allie Kemp, freshman Hailey Erkkila, sophomore Annika Opsasnick, and senior Cassidy Jenkins placed fifth.

Cornell had representation, and good performances, across the board:  Alfred (12.99) and Garza (13.12) in the 100, junior Lauren Woods (65.12) in the 400, Brumley (2:16.24), sophomore Kaitlyn Bonnet (2:20.29), and Huelskamp (2:20.41) in the 800, freshman Rebecca Hasser (4:40.80), Holl (4:43.36, a PR) freshman Isa Meyers (4:46.68), freshman Rachel Green (4:52.45), freshman Sam Law (4:59.05), and sophomore Gab Dewhurst (5:14.53) in the 1500, freshman Lucy Hurt (11:32.08, a PR) in the 3K steeple, Megan Cameron in the vault, junior Julia Valkos (36-2 ¾) in the triple jump, and seniors Sochima Bishop (155-5) and Autumn Covington (153-10) in the hammer.

Next up for the Cornell women is a pair of two-day meets on April 19-20:  the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, VA and the Cortland Classic in nearby Cortland, NY.
