ITHACA, N.Y. – Coming off a win in its first cup race of the season, the No. 1 Cornell men's lightweight rowing team will look to carry that momentum into a critical early season race with No. 2 Princeton as the crews battle for the Platt Cup and the Harriott Trophy. Racing will begin on the Cayuga Lake Inlet with the fourth varsity eight at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, April 13. The day will conclude with the varsity eight race at 9:40 a.m.
THE PLATT CUP: The Platt Cup was placed in competition in 1967 and is given annually to the winner of the varsity eight race between Cornell and Princeton. It is given in honor of the late Phillip Platt '60, who rowed for Cornell in the late '50s. A crewmate of Platt's, Dr. Richard Schwartz, obtained the funds for a trophy from his former Big Red oarsmen. Platt rowed on the 1957 heavyweight freshman crew under Coach Carl Ullrich and then moved to the lightweights under Coach Walt Schlaepfer. Through 2018, Princeton has won the Platt Cup 38 times and Cornell has won just 16 times, but the Big Red has taken the five of the last seven cups, including the last meeting in Ithaca during the 2017 season.
LAST TIME AT THE PLATT CUP: The No. 5 Big Red won a pair of races, but No. 3 Princeton took the victory in the varsity eight to earn the Platt Cup on Lake Carnegie on April 14, 2018. The win in the varsity eight also proved to be the tie breaker to give the Tigers the recommissioned Harriott Trophy, awarded to the day's point leader. Racing got underway with the fourth varsity eight, which was won by the host Tigers. The Big Red responded with back-to-back victories in the third and second varsity eight races, before Princeton took the final event of the day with a win in the varsity eight.
UP NEXT: Cornell remains in Ithaca to host No. 6 Columbia and No. 12 MIT for the Geiger Cup on Saturday, April 20.
