ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 1 Cornell men's lightweight rowing team will play host to No. 3 Columbia, and look to avenge last season's loss to the Lions, as the crews battle for the Geiger Cup on Saturday, April 20. Racing begins at 8:40 a.m. on the Cayuga Lake Inlet, with the varsity eight race slated for 9:40 a.m.

THE GEIGER CUP: The Geiger Cup was placed in competition in 1956 in memory of Andy Geiger, the first athletic director at MIT and it is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Cornell, Columbia and MIT.

THE SERIES HISTORY: Since its inception in 1956, Cornell has won the Geiger Cup 37 times, while Columbia and MIT have won it 14 and 12 times, respectively.
* The Big Red has claimed the cup in 12 of the last 16 seasons.
* Cornell and Columbia have traded victories in each of the last four seasons, with the Big Red winning in 2015 and 2017 and the Lions taking the cup in 2016 and 2018.
* The 2019 season will mark the first time in the 64-year history of the cup that MIT will not participate.

LAST TIME AT THE GEIGER CUP: The Big Red's third varsity eight defeated Columbia by open water, but the No. 2 Lions earned victories in the varsity eight and the second varsity eight to reclaim the Geiger Cup on the Charles River on April 21, 2018.

UP NEXT: The Big Red hosts its final cup race of the season when it welcomes No. 8 Dartmouth for the Baggaley Bowl on Saturday, April 27.
