He was the individual cross country champion at the 1917 Intercollegiates, helping Cornell to a second-place team finish. Captain of the 1917 cross country squad, he was re-elected to that post for 1918; however, several intercollegiate athletic contests were suspended for the 1918-19 academic year due to the interruption of World War I. He won back-to-back two-mile run titles at the outdoor IC4As – 1918 and 1919 – as Cornell won the team title both years. At the 1919 Intercollegiates, he established the IC4A two-mile record of 9.22, a mark which remained unbroken for 10 years. Captain of the 1919 track team, he was named to the All-American Intercollegiate and National track teams. At the 1920 Olympic Games, he won a gold medal as a member of the 3,000-meter relay; he also participated in the 5,000 meters but did not place. At the time of his death in 1956, he was a special assistant to the general manager of General Motors Overseas Operations Division and resided in New York City.
