He ranks among the all-time great Cornell wrestling standouts. He was captain of the 1945-46 team and won the Eastern 145-pound championship. After earning varsity letters in 1942 and 1943, he spent two years of service in the U.S. Navy. He returned to the university to earn another varsity letter in 1946. He was Eastern runner-up at 145-pounds in 1942. He won the National AAU title in 1946 and 1947. In 1948, he finished third in the Olympic final tryouts. He was head wrestling coach at Cornell from 1948 until 1974. During his 27-year tenure, he turned out 17 winning teams and had an overall record of 203-135-7. His teams won 11 Ivy League titles and the Eastern championship in 1958, while placing second at the Easterns and third at the NCAA tournament in 1953. He was head coach of the U.S. Pan-American team in 1967.
