A running back, he graduated third on the all-time Cornell career rushing list with 2,557 yards, a mark that ranked seventh all-time in Ivy League history. McNiff had 11 games in his career in which he rushed for 100 or more yards; his best rushing day was 189 yards at Harvard in 1990, followed by 181 yards vs. Columbia in 1991. He led the team in rushing all three of his varsity seasons. McNiff was named the Ivy League Sophomore (now Rookie) of the year in 1989. He was a first-team All-Ivy pick in 1990, after earning All-Ivy honorable mention in '89 and '91. He sat out his sophomore year (1988) with an injury. McNiff was runner-up in the balloting for the Ivy Player of the Year Award in 1990, when Cornell went 7-3 overall and tied for the Ivy title with a 6-1 record. McNiff's 95-yard rush at Columbia that season ranks as the longest run from scrimmage in Cornell history and the third-longest in Ancient Eight history. The team MVP in 1991, he was first in the Ivy League and second in the nation in all-purpose running and 13th in I-AA rushing in 1990. McNiff was named the MVP of the 1991 Epson/Ivy Bowl All-Star game in Tokyo, Japan.
