He was a two-year letterman as a defenseman in lacrosse, earning letters in 1965 and 1966. He was an All-America honorable mention selection and an All-Ivy first-team pick in 1966, helping Cornell to its most successful season since the start of intercollegiate play in the sport at the university in 1892, compiling a 12-0 record overall and 6-0 in the Ivy League for its first-ever Ivy title and its first undefeated season since the 1907 team went 7-0. He played a prominent role in the complete turnaround season in 1966, after the 1965 team went 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the Ivy League. He was an All-Ivy honorable mention pick and recipient of the team's most improved player award in 1965. He co-recipient of the team's most valuable player award in 1966. He played freshman football and started all games as a defensive back; earned junior varsity letters in football in 1963 and 1964.
