Sharpe, who earned his medical degree from Yale in 1902, came to Ithaca in 1912 as Cornell's football, basketball and baseball coach. His 1915 football team was the University's first undefeated team, winning all nine of its games and being acclaimed by Walter Camp as the national champion. His six-year gridiron record was 34-21-1. He coached the baseball team from 1913-1919, and was in charge of the basketball team from 1912-19. His 1914 basketball team won the Eastern League championship, and he compiled a 78-32 overall record. From 1919-21 he was director of athletics and head football coach at Yale University. He returned to Ithaca in 1921 to organize the Ithaca School of Physical Education, a forerunner of Ithaca College, and he remained in that position until 1927.
