He was a three-year letterman in football (1952-53-54) and was a member of the freshman football team in 1951 and the freshman golf team in 1952. A guard, Van Buren started all games at Cornell except when he missed the first four contests of the 1954 season with an injury. His excellent play helped the 1953 (4-3-2 overall) and 1954 (5-4 overall) teams to unofficial Ivy League titles. He was an Associated Press All-Ivy second-team selection in 1954, in addition to earning All-East second-team honors by the United Press and the International News Service. Van Buren also received AP All-East honorable mention in 1954. He was named co-team MVP (with Len Oniskey) in 1954.
