He was one of Cornell's most laudable benefactors, with his financial gifts going help support the Cornell Plantations and the departments of engineering, geology and athletics. His contributions to Cornell include the F.R. Newman Laboratory of Nuclear Studies; Helen Newman Hall, for many years the home of the women's athletic program; and the F.R. Newman Arboretum at the Cornell Plantations. He also endowed four professorships and two directorships, the Helen A. Newman Directorship of Women's Athletics, named for his wife, and the Elizabeth Newman Wilds Directorship of Cornell Plantations, named for his daughter. Newman Arena, home of the Cornell basketball and volleyball programs, was named in his memory in 1993. Newman served on the board of trustees from 1951-58, and in 1966 he was named a Presidential Councillor, the highest honor granted by the university.
