He was a pitcher on the 1915 freshman baseball team and on the 1916 varsity squad that compiled a 13-9 record. Olsen then enlisted in the military with the USNRF in July 1917, serving aboard the USS Granite State, and was discharged from active services in December 1918. He returned to the University to continue his studies. He was captain elect of the 1919 team, and was considered one of the top pitchers in intercollegiate baseball that season. Following graduation from Cornell Law School with a LLB degree in 1921, he began a nine-year professional baseball career. He played for the Detroit Tigers under Ty Cobb from 1921-23 and then spent time with teams from Kansas City, Atlanta, Syracuse and Birmingham, retiring in 1929 when he started his own business. From 1935-44 he served on the Liquor Control Commission for the state of Connecticut.
