He contributed to Cornell in general and sports in particular in a number of ways. As an undergraduate he played freshman football, was assistant manager of the track team during his junior year and was treasurer of the IC4A. He was a member of the Widow staff for three years and was editor-in-chief as a senior. He wrote the song, The Big Red team, which is still cherished by Cornellians today. He returned to Cornell in 1919, following a period where he was a lawyer and writer, and took up the position of graduate manager of athletics (or director of athletics, as it was later called). During his regime in athletic administration (1919-1935), Hoy Field was built for baseball and the Cornell Crescent was constructed to provide more seating for football. As an undergraduate he resided in Hudson, N.Y. Following his retirement as athletic director he lived in Jacksonville and wrote columns for the Ithaca Journal and Cornell Alumni News.
