Wakeman was a three-year letterman in football as an outstanding tackle and a kicker. He was captain of the 1929 team that compiled a 6-2 record. The crowning touch of that fine season was his selection to the All-Eastern Association Press team by the Eastern sports writers. He lettered in wrestling in 1928-29 and 1929-30, and won the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association 175-pound championship as a senior.
