He was a three-year letterman as a guard on the varsity football teams of 1959, 1960 and 1961. He was named to the Coaches All-Ivy second team, in addition to earning Associated Press All-Ivy second team, AP All-East honorable mention and ECAC Major College All-East first-team honors in 1961. He was also the co-recipient of the team's Pop Warner Most Valuable Player Award in 1961. Thomas, who received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell in 1963, graduated from Canton (Pa.) High School and makes his home in Kennett Square, Pa.
