An outstanding lightweight Eastern champion, he co-captained the team as a senior, and won the intercollegiate boxing championship at 127 pounds in 1938 and 1939. He only lost one fight in his first three years at Cornell. He followed his brother, Jacob, who was prominent in football and boxing, to Cornell. As an undergraduate he resided in Utica, N.Y.
