Scholl is given much credit for two of Cornell's biggest gridiron conquests ever - both over Ohio State in 1939 and 1940. As a reserve halfback in both years, weighing only 159 pounds at 5-8, he sparked come-from-behind victories with his running and passing. He threw the touchdown pass in the famous Fifth Down game, which Cornell forfeited two days later to Dartmouth after learning that the TD had come on the Big Red's fifth down. In baseball, he was an outstanding third baseman for three years and was co-captain his senior year when Cornell won the Ivy title. He earned the world renown as a highly decorated ace pilot in the Air Force during World War II.
