She was a two-time All-Ivy goaltender in field hockey, earning first-team honors in 1990 after receiving second-team honors in 1988. Bernal was co-captain of the 1990 team, earning regional All-America honors that year. She set Cornell records for saves in a game (30, 1990), season (222) and career (597) and shutouts in a career (12). Bernal was one of only two goaltenders selected to the prestigious U.S. Elite field hockey team that played in the World University Games in Sheffield, England, in July 1991, and in the Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, in August 1991. She also played on the junior varsity lacrosse team as a freshman and served as an assistant coach for the Big Red's field hockey and lacrosse teams during the 1992-93 campaigns.
