Van Sickle, a tremendous supporter of Cornell athletics, has been a sports reporter for nearly 50 years. His association with The Ithaca Journal began in 1932, when, as a sophomore in high school he became the high school sports stringer. Following graduation from high school, The Journal hired him as a full-time reporter in the spring of 1935. In 1946, after a two-year tour of duty with the Navy, he was named The Journal's sports editor. A recognized, regional authority on sports, Van Sickle is a former director of the Football Writers Association of America, and a New York state representative for the Heisman Trophy organization, and has written on Eastern football and baseball for the NCAA guide. He has written more stories for Cornell football programs over the years than all the rest of the contributing writers combined. The Eastern College Athletic Conference presented him with their annual award for his contribution to the coverage of Eastern sports in 1977.
