He won the Eastern Intercollegiate wrestling championship at 157 pounds in 1959, after runner-up performances in both the 1957 and ’58. He lost the championship in 1958 by only one points. A co-captain of the team in 1959, he went on to become the 1961 Amateur Athletic Union national wrestling champion at 160 pounds. He had won 20 straight dual matches until a loss to Harvard his senior year (going 10-0 as a junior and 7-0 as a sophomore). He helped the 1958 team to Ivy League 6-0) and Eastern Intercollegiate titles and a 9-1 overall mark. The ’59 team posted a mark of 11-1, won the Ivy championship and placed third at the EIWA tournament. Friedman had a career dual record of 23-1-2. In 1984 he was one of five recipients of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Awards. The awards are given annually to former-student athletes who have led distinguished lives after having outstanding athletic careers in college. He graduated from Oceanside High School in N.Y.
