Van Orman was one of the nation's leading football ends from 1904-07, playing the first three seasons for Coach Glenn (Pop) Warner. From 1911 through 1919 he was assistant coach of football at Cornell, in charge of the ends, and played a major role in the development of the 1915 club that was undefeated and recognized as the national champion. From 1920 through 1935, Van Orman served at Johns Hopkins. He was director of athletics, head football coach, and was lacrosse coach for 11 years. Though he never played lacrosse, he built nationally prominent teams. In 1928 and 1932 he coached the United States squads in the Olympic Games. He returned to Cornell in 1936 as an assistant football coach and served in that capacity during the regimes of Carl Snavely, Ed McKeever and George James. For several seasons he also coached the lightweight football squad. He was head coach of lacrosse at Cornell from 1940-49.
