An outstanding stroke under Cornell’s legendary crew coach, Charles Courtney, he rowed in 1915 varsity crew that won the IRA championship.  He was elected commodore of the 1915 and 1916 crews, but he resigned as commodore in 1916 to coach the Cornell crew.  He also stroked the 1914 freshman crew that won the IRA.  A long-time supporter of Cornell athletics, he donated funds for the construction of the Cornell boathouse in 1957 and established an endowment for its maintenance.  One of Cornell’s most effective leaders, Collyer was chairman of the board of trustees for six of the 25 years he was a member and was named trustee emeritus in 1965.
