He captained the Cornell tennis team in 1916 and was the University champion in 1915 and 1916. Hunter also played hockey as a sophomore and junior. He was one of the world’s foremost tennis players in the 1920s. He ranked second to Bill Tilden in the United States in 1927, 1928 and 1929. In 1928, he was runner-up for the U.S. championship to Henri Cochet of France and in ’29 to Tilden. Hunter was runner-up for Wimbledon championship in 1923. He was on the Davis Cup team as Tilden’s doubles partner in 1927 and 1928. In 1927, he and Tilden won the Olympic gold medal as doubles champions that year. Hunter won the Wimbledon mixed doubles with Elizabeth Ryan in 1927 and in 1929 he won with Helen Wills. He is enshrined in the International Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport.
