He was an outstanding foilsman through his varsity intercollegiate fencing career at Cornell. As a senior, he won All-America honors after placing second at the 1960 NCAA championships, but won the Illinois Memorial Award as the most accomplished performer in the tournament. He was named the NCAA's Fencer of the Year in 1960. He was head coach of fencing at Cornell from 1961-76. He compiled a 15-year overall record of 116-75 and led his 1975 team to a second-place finish at the NCAA championships and tied for the Ivy League title for the second straight year. He also coached the Cornell women's fencing team from 1971-75, compiling a five-year record of 32-1 and winning the national title in 1972 and 1973 and was second in 1974. He was named the men's coach of the year by the NCAA in 1975 and the women's coach of the year in 1972 and 1973 by the NIWFA.
