As a member of the U.S. equestrian team in the 3-day competition, he won a silver medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and again won a silver in that event at the 1972 Games in Munich. He finished 12th in the overall individual standings at the '64 Games. He also rode in the 1968 Olympic Games but did not finish the competition. At the 1963 Pan American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he won team gold and individual silver medals. He won a letter as a member of the Cornell men's polo team in 1961-62, after earning his numerals as a freshman the previous season. He trains candidates for the U.S. equestrian team. (He received his bachelor of science degree from Cornell in 1964.)
