A crack center in football, he played a key role in the 1939 team’s undefeated season and the 1940 squad’s 6-2 mark. He earned third team All-America honors in 1939 from the Associated Press and second team accolades from the NEA Sports Syndicate. As a catcher, he lettered in baseball in 1939, 1940 and 1941. The ’39 team tied for the league championship and won it outright in 1940. He was co-captain of the 1941 baseball team.
