A three-year letterman as a tight end in football, Suren was a unanimous All-Ivy first-team pick and was named to the Associated Press Division I-AA All-America first team in 1982. He was an All-Ivy honorable mention selection in 1981. Suren was captain and voted the team's most valuable player in 1982 when he led the team in receiving with 26 catches for 287 yards, after placing second in receiving in 1980 and in 1981. Suren was also a two-year letterman in wrestling. He placed sixth at heavyweight at the EIWA championships in 1983, while taking fifth place at the Easterns and third at the New York state championships in 1982. Suren was an All-Ivy second-team pick in 1982 and in 1983, when Cornell won its first outright Ivy League wrestling title since 1966.
