Carlson was an honorable mention All-American and second-team All-Ivy midfielder in 1963, helping the Big Red to a record of 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Ivy League. He finished the season with 19 goals, including a season-high five tallies vs. Harvard, and one assist for 20 points.
