Brandeis was an All-American in the outdoor 880 meters in 1961 after finishing fifth nationally, the same year he won the Heptagonal title in the event. He posted a school record time of 1:49.6 in the event, a converted time in the 800 meters that still ranks in the school's top 10 marks more than 50 years later. He placed third in 1959 and 1961 and fourth in 1960 in the 1,000 yard race at Heps and was second in the 880 in 1960. Brandeis won a Heps title in the 4x440 relay as a senior in 1961.
