After spending his freshman season at Princeton, where he was named third team All-American, Allner transferred to Cornell and enrolled in the Navy's V-12 program, which provided accelerated officer training during World War II. During his season with the Big Red, he was named first team All-American and was chosen as the winner of the 1944 William C. Schmeisser Memorial Trophy for the outstanding defensive player in college. He went on to serve in the Navy in 1944 and 1945 before returning to Princeton to finish his playing career.
