Carter was part of the mile relay that finished third nationally at the 1967 NCAA championship behind only Iowa and Rice. Nearly 50 years later, his participation in the 4x400 relay outdoors in 3:06.9 is still a school record. Carter also finished second in the 440 dash at the 1967 outdoor Heps.
