Hershey was a three-year letterman as an end on the football team in 1938, 1939 and 1940, helping Cornell to a 5-1-1 record in 1938, 8-0 in '39 and a 6-2 mark in 1940, with unofficial Ivy titles in '38 and '39. He was an Associated Press All-America honorable mention selection in 1939 and in 1940, while earning AP All-Eastern honorable mention in 1940. Hershey was named to Eastern College All-Star squad to play vs. New York Giants in 1941. He was drafted by the Cleveland Rams of the National Football League. Hershey won a letter as a hurdler on the track team in 1939.
