A first-team All-American and first-team All-Ivy selection at attack in 1974, Trenz finished the season ranked second in the nation in scoring with 91 points on 47 goals and 44 assists. A team captain as a senior, he helped Cornell to an overall record of 12-2 (6-0 Ivy) as it advanced to the national semifinals. Trenz was named the 1974 Ivy League Player of the Year, was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game, and was named Cornell team MVP that same season. Trenz transferred to Cornell from Penn State, where he led the nation in scoring and was an honorable mention All-American during his sophomore season. He graduated as the NCAA's career leader in points (6.21) and goals (3.44) per game and was third in assists (2.76) between his time with Penn State and Cornell.
