Smith was an honorable mention All-American and a first-team All-Ivy midfielder in 1985 after leading the team with 20 goals and adding 11 assists for 32 points. His senior season, he won four team awards, including the Dr. Ray Van Orman Memorial Award, as the squad’s MVP; the Joe Philip Memorial Award, given annually to the player contributing most to the overall team effort; the Lawrence Van Buren Woodworth Memorial Award, given to the player who most exemplifies competitive spirit and fair play; and the Al “Junior” Kelz-Mike Herriott Award as the outstanding senior player. Smith was a four-year letter winner and served as team co-captain his senior season. He was also chosen second-team All-Ivy in 1984. Following his senior season, Smith was chosen to participate in the North-South All-Star Game.
