A three-year letterman in football, Spang was a hard-running back on the 1936 team, and played end in 1937 and 1938. He received Grantland Rice All-America honorable mention honors in 1937 and '38, and garnered Associated Press All-America honorable mention his senior year, in addition to being an AP All-East honorable mention pick. Spang started at right end in the 1939 North-South All-Star game.
