Cushing lettered in football during the 1941, '42 & '43. He captained the 1943 team which compiled 6-4 record. Cushing received United Press All-America and Associated Press All-East honorable mention honors as a center in 1943. He was selected on the East team that played in the East-West Game in San Francisco on New Year's Day 1944. Cushing also played on the College All-Star team that played the Chicago Bears. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, but due to WWII, ended up playing for the Navy following graduation.
