An outstanding runner in track, he was captain of the 1953 team. In 1951, he placed fifth in the 440 at the outdoor NCAA championships after finishing third in that event at the IC4A championships, and he was third in the indoor IC4A 600. He was a member of the mile relay which set a meet and school record in winning the Penn Relays. As a junior, he won the outdoor Heps 440 and ran the third leg on the second-place 880 relay at the Penn Relays. As a senior, he anchored the victorious mile relay at the New York Athletic Club Games at Madison Square Garden. He placed fourth in the 600 and ran the final leg on the winning mile relay at the indoor Heps. He set the world record in the 300-yard dash at the 174th Regiment Indoor Games in Buffalo in 1953.
