Kolb was an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press in 1951 in football while playing end for the Big Red. He was also honorable All-East and All-Ivy by the AP in 1951. Kolb was a three-year letter winner who also played lacrosse at Cornell. He caught seven passes for 113 yards and a touchdown that season and had career totals of 19 catches for 313 yards and one score. He  was also an honorable mention All-American defender on the 1953 lacrosse squad that posted the Big Red’s first winning record (7-5) since the 1944 team went 4-1. He served as team captain that same season.
