As a midfielder on the lacrosse team, Shaw was a three-time All-Ivy first-team selection. He was also a three-time All-American, earning first-team honors in 1971, second-team honors in 1971 and was a third-team pick in 1970. He was tri-captain and was voted the team's most valuable player in 1972. During his three years with the varsity, Cornell compiled an overall record of 34-4 and won three Ivy League titles with an undefeated three-year mark of 18-0. The Big Red also captured the NCAA championship in 1971, defeating Maryland 12-6 in the title game. Shaw's goal with 2:07 remaining gave Cornell a 17-16 victory over Army in the semifinal game of the 1971 NCAA tournament. Over his career, he accounted for 123 points on 86 goals and 37 assists.
