Bruno was an All-America third-team attackman in 1982 and received honorable mention All-America honors in 1983. In his first year after transferring to Cornell from Nassau Community College, Bruno led the 1982 Big Red to an 11-2 overall record, the Ivy League title with a 6-0 mark, and a third-place finish at the NCAA championships. He was an All-Ivy first-team attackman in 1982 and a second-team pick in 1983. Bruno was named the Ivy League Player of the Year in 1982 after leading the conference in scoring (10-21-31). That same season, he also led the team in assists (38) and points (60). He was also named the co-MVP of the 1983 team after leading the team in assists (24).
