He was a big blocking back for three years on the highly successful football teams of 1938-40. Known for his strength and endurance, he was nicknamed "60-minutes Matuszczak." (He has since changed the spelling of his last name.) He earned All-America second and third team recognition in 1939 and was captain of the 1940 team. Matuszak was one of the top hitters on the baseball team for two years as a right-fielder and he also played basketball for one year.
