Hayward was an All-America, All-Ivy and All-ECAC first-team hockey goaltender in 1982. He compiled a 3.82 career goals against average which ranked him eighth on Cornell's all-time list. He set the school record for career saves (2,225) and tied the mark for saves in a game (61). Overall, he compiled a career won-lost record of 42-27-2. He was team MVP and tri-captain his senior year. After graduation, he played in the NHL with Winnipeg, Montreal and Minnesota.
