An outstanding diver for the men's swimming team, Light was a two-time All-American and a three-time Eastern finalist on both the high and low boards. At the Eastern championships in 1972, he was 12th on the 1-meter board and was seventh at 3 meters. At the NCAA championships, Light placed 10th on the 1-meter board to earn All-America honors; and he finished 28th on the high board. In 1971, he was sixth at the Easterns on the 1-meter and was fifth on the 3-meter event, and he placed 11th in the finals of the 1-meter board competition at the NCAA championships to earn All-America honors. As a sophomore, Light was fourth in the 1 meter and fifth in the 3 meters at the Easterns and was named to the All-Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving League team.
