Higgins was an honorable mention All-American and a unanimous first-team All-Ivy defensemen in 1984. A three-year starter and team captain as a senior, he won the 1984 Joe Philip Memorial Award, given annually to the player contributing most to the overall team effort; and the J.E.B. Sportsmanship Award, given to the player who best combines the qualities of lacrosse ability, leadership, fairness, courteous relations and graceful acceptance of results on and off the playing field. Higgins twice won the team’s Lawrence Van Buren Woodworth Memorial Award, given to the player who most exemplifies competitive spirit and fair play, and was named the team’s Most Improved Player in 1982. He was also a second-team All-Ivy choice in 1983. Following his senior season, Higgins was selected to participate in the North-South All-Star Game.Â
