As a sophomore, he was the recipient of the Georges Cointe Award as the outstanding fencer in the Eastern tournament. He also won the Princeton-Cornell Cup in 1968 and was the epee NCAA champion that same year. A co-captain of the team as a senior, he was also an All-American in 1967 when he finished second in the Eastern tournament and tied for third in the nationals. He was a three-time All-Ivy first team selection in the epee event. As an undergraduate he resided in Princeton, N.J., where his father was head coach of fencing at Princeton University.
