Happel was a third-team All-American defenseman in 1982. He was a three-time All-Ivy selection, including consecutive first-team honors as a junior and senior. He served as team captain in 1982 and won the team’s J.E.B. Sportsmanship Award, given to the player who best combines the qualities of lacrosse ability, leadership, fairness, courteous relations and graceful acceptance of results on and off the playing field, as well as the team’s Rick LaFrance Trainer’s award.  Happel played in 38 career games and finished his career with 13 goals and 161 ground balls.Â
