He was named to the All-America first team in 1955 on the basis of his second place finish in foil at the NCAA fencing championships. A co-captain of the team as a junior, he was the recipient of the Illinois Memorial Award as the outstanding fencer of the 1954 NCAA tournament following his fifth place finish in foil competition, earning second-team All-America accolades. He won the individual foil title at the Eastern Intercollegiates in 1954 and helped Cornell tie for the foil team championship.
