A three-year letterman, Metzler was an outstanding offensive tackle on the unofficial Ivy championship team of 1949 and on the 1950 (7-2) and 1951 (6-3) teams. He was an Associated Press All-America honorable mention selection in 1951, in addition to earning AP All-East first team, and AP All-Ivy first-team honors. Metzler was selected to play in the North-South Senior Bowl Game.
