Ashbaugh was an All-American in 1951 in the high hurdles in addition to being the IC4A champion in the event. He won the outdoor Heptagonal 120-hurdles title in 1949 and again in 1950. He placed fourth in the triple jump at the 1952 Olympic Games. As a stellar pivotman in basketball, he was instrumental in the first 20-win season in Cornell basketball history in 1950-51 when the team compiled a 20-5 mark. He was runner-up in team scoring as a junior and senior and was selected by the coaches on the All-Ivy second team and made several all-opponent teams.
