Avery was an honorable mention All-American and first-team All-Ivy defenseman in 1980. He served as team captain his senior year and following the season he was selected to participate in the North-South Senior All-Star Game.  Avery won the team’s Joe Philip Memorial Award, given annually to the player contributing most to the overall team effort. He was an honorable mention All-Ivy selection in 1979.
